Public transport in Szeged is operated by SZKT (Szegedi Közlekedési Társaság) — Szeged Transport Company. The network consists of tram and bus lines covering the city and nearby villages that were annexed to Szeged.
Tram System
Szeged has a tram network with two main lines:
- Tram 1: Main line running through the city center, connecting major residential districts and the university
- Tram 2: Secondary line serving different areas and neighborhoods
The tram system is the backbone of public transport in Szeged, with frequent service during peak hours.
Bus Network
Extensive bus routes complement the tram system, serving:
- Residential neighborhoods not on tram routes
- Annexed villages (Tápé, Szőreg, Kiskundorozsma, Szentmihálytelek)
- University campus and student dormitories
- Shopping centers (Árkád, Plaza)
- Industrial areas
- Hospital and medical facilities
Night buses operate on limited routes after regular services end.
Ticket Types
SZKT offers various ticket options:
- Single ticket (Vonaljegy): One journey, validate on boarding
- Transfer ticket: Multiple transfers within 90 minutes
- 10-trip ticket book: Discounted bulk tickets (can be shared)
- Daily pass: 24-hour unlimited travel
- 3-day tourist pass: Extended stay option
- Weekly pass: 7 consecutive days

How to Buy
Purchase tickets at:
- SZKT customer centers — main office in city center, major stops
- Ticket vending machines — at tram stops and major bus stations (accept cash and cards)
- SZKT mobile app — digital tickets for Android/iOS
- Newsagents and tobacco shops — look for “Jegypénztár” or “Dohánybolt” signs

Validation
Important: Validate your ticket immediately when boarding:
- Trams: Use orange/red validation boxes on board
- Buses: Validate near the entrance doors
- Monthly passes: Pre-validated for entire month
Ticket inspectors (controllers) check frequently. Traveling without a valid ticket results in significant on-the-spot fines (typically 8,000-12,000 HUF or more).
